I admit that my mission to Gettysburg was not so much for the historical aspect of the town. I wanted to pick up some early tintypes, and since Gettysburg is known for antiques and its victorian history I figured I would explore some of the antique shops while the boys went on to do their "manly" things. I came across one of many antique stores in Gettysburg and found a box full of old tin types. Wow, I had discovered heaven! The tintypes had some imperfections but that really didn't bother me. The images were hauntingly beautiful and many illustrated a quality of fashion for that time. I also wanted to have my hands on something victorian. Yes, I went crazy and bought almost the entire box.
It's been a very busy April. Every weekend had some type of special event. The best thing this month for me was a weekend trip to Gettysburg. It seems like lately I have become quite the history girl blogging about nothing but historical events (I blame it on our historical area). Gettysburg was amazing and if you live in the area or even a few hours away make sure you take the time to visit this beautiful and historical town. I fell in love with Gettysburg. There are no words to describe the energy that fills the town of Gettysburg. The feeling behind this serene and quaint town is quite peculiar knowing the history of its brutal battle. I had many great photo ops and I took hundreds of pictures and since photography has become my new pastime I have become very interested in early photography. I admit that my mission to Gettysburg was not so much for the historical aspect of the town. The images were hauntingly beautiful and many illustrated a quality of fashion for that time. I also wanted to have my hands on something victorian. Yes, I went crazy and bought almost the entire box. In addition to finding some great tintypes I also found a small daguerreotype portrait (below) which I had to get. What better way to celebrate photography than owning the very first practical system of photography brought to life in 1839. Not sure if the piece is antebellum or victorian but it was a great piece to pick up for its photographic history. As a photographer, I had to own some of history's first form of photography. Owning these photographs also take me back to my early fashion design roots as I get to revisit period clothing by researching the fabrics, accessories, and styles in the photographs in order to find an approximate date of when the pictures were taken. Yeah, I have strange hobbies but it's fun to learn new things.

AuthorPlain and simple, I'm painfully the artsy type. I like to keep my mind occupied because it keeps me out of trouble. I love art, photography, music and the 1940's. Between art exhibits, photography projects, design work, developing and promoting my new upcoming line the "LuvSicks", dressing up in early 40's vintage clothing for WWII living history events and endlessly researching the 40's home front and women's fashion to help educate the audience, and dusting off my drum sticks once in a while, I am endlessly busy. In a nutshell I draw silly pictures, shoot pictures, and play dress-up. In a nutshell I guess I never grew up. In a nutshell I guess I'm just a nut! Archives
